Field Trip in 2024 Summer

OBJECTIVE.

On 29-30 July 2024, twenty-three vibrant MPMA students from Cambodia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Philippines, the Kyrgyz Republic, China, Tanzania, São Tomé and Príncipe and Ghana embarked on an exciting exploration of Nagasaki. This historic city is known for its commercial importance and the tragic impact of the atomic bomb.
The trip focused on natural and human disasters. We visited the Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, followed by an exploration of Gunkanjima Island. Once a bustling coal mining
centre, Gunkanjima is now a powerful symbol of Japan's rapid industrialization and energy transition. Our stay at the Unzen Hot Springs provided relaxation and a first-hand look at the benefits of geothermal energy from an underground magma reservoir.

The students asked many insightful questions after the visit:
"Why do people choose to live in the Shimabara area despite the nearby
active volcano?"
"How did Nagasaki manage to rebuild immediately after the disaster?"
"Did people in Gunkanjima live with their families despite the higher
cost of living?"

The trip to Nagasaki enriched the students' understanding of Japanese history and highlighted the importance of experiential learning beyond the classroom.
